A pretty Devon town on the north tip of the Exmoor National Park, Lynton overlooks the sea from its position at the top of a gorge above Lynmouth, its twin town below. The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway was first opened in 1890 as a much-needed means of connecting the towns, but it is now very popular as a means of viewing the stunning coastline. After enjoying the views along the 862 foot track, the Railway’s Cliff Top Café offers a place to relax with a cream tea or cup of coffee.
Lynmouth Bay is easily accessible and is a great location for rock-pooling and surfing - it is claimed that under the right conditions, it is one of the best left-hand surf locations in the UK. Other fabulous beaches along this stretch of coastline include Combe Martin, Woolacombe and the beautiful Croyde beach.
The many attractions in this area include: the Lyn Model Railway; the Lyn and Exmoor Museum; the Lynmouth Flood Memorial Hall; Lynton Cinema; the Middleham Gardens; and the Valley of Rocks, a dry valley that runs parallel to the coast about half a mile west of Lynton. The South West Coast Path passes through Lynton, and the Two Moors Way begins at Lynmouth and runs to Ivybridge in South Devon.
